Thalia
Gives Birth: To new home collection!

August 2007
On the rooftop of Homestead's New York showroom office, Thalia, singing
sensation, fashion designer, mother-to-be, and wife of music mogul Tommy Mottola,
held court to a packed house of retail buyers seeking to find more about the
Mexican beauty's newest venture: an eponymous home bedding line inspired by her
love of silks, laced, drama and ethnic influences. "This is another dream come
true for me," she explained as she sat around the collection prior to going
upstairs to meet her guests who were being serenaded by a Latin jazz band. "It
is another dream that I accomplished as a business woman and I am very excited
about it."
Wearing a sleeveless sheer, black baby doll top, long pearl and crystal necklace,
black leggings and two-inch strappy stilettos, she radiated a warm glow that had
more to do with being muy contenta with being six months pregnant and the launch
of many new projects, than feeling the tepid temperature of a balmy New York
summer night. Divided into three signatures, the bedding line is loosely based
around themes: Romance, offers uber girly ruffles, ruching and quilting inspired
by Marie Antoinette; Elegance, presents a mix of gold and cream jacquards with
ethnically ambiguous patterns. "It could be Latin, it could be Indian, and it?s
our crown jewel of the collection," she says; Sensual, she says, takes its
inspiration from couture collections, specifically John Galliano and his
over-the-top gowns. "It's very inviting,"explains Thalia of the robust Prussion
blue silks with unexpected tie-dye backing—but with a slight Latin touch. "We're
known for being that chick, that girl with the color and excitement. And I
wanted to blend that with something more subtle, romantic, feminine and exciting."
"Thalia was involved with everything, selecting the colors, critiquing the line,
fabrics, everything—and she was so easy to work with during this
process,"explains David Greenstein, president of Homestead Brands, the
manufacturer known for producing home fashion brands for the likes of Geoffrey
Beene and KitsonLA, and who is responsible for bringing Thalia?s line to life.
It took six months to take the collection from conception to completion-the same
amount of time she's been with child. So we had to ask. Between morning sickness
and body changes, how did she do it? "Pregnancy has made everything more
three-dimensional for me; I'm more receptive and everything is more special. My
gestation period is my top priority, but at the same time, I cannot stop myself!"
