THALIA'S STATEMENT REGARDING
THE CONTROVERSY ABOUT HER "THALIA SODI" COLLECTION AND KMART
"As the designer of my own clothing line, I am always conscious about every
aspect of the designing business. That includes where and how my clothes are
being produced. Kmart and Sears Holdings who are solely responsible for all the
production and manufacturing of my clothing line, and, who I trust and know to
be very diligent, ensure that active factories involved comply with the rigid
standards of the law and are audited. I have also been assured by Kmart that
this is NOT ONE OF THEIR VENDORS, and that they will be handling this serious
matter in the most expeditious way possible."
KMART’S STATEMENT REGARDING JORDANIAN FACTORIES AND THE "THALIA SODI" COLLECTION
1. Sears Holdings (Sears and Kmart) has audited all active factories in Jordan.
However, we are not familiar with this factory. Therefore, if Thalía Sodi
merchandise was produced at Maintrand International (as the NLC suggest), it was
unauthorized subcontracting without our knowledge, which if true, would be a
violation of our contract with the vendor responsible.
2. Once we identify the vendor/factory who may have subcontracted this
merchandise without our knowledge, we will take action.
3. Kmart is committed to conducting its business with a high standard of
business ethics and in compliance with all applicable laws. The company expects
its vendors to do the same. Consistent with these values, the company has a
buying policy that sets forth requirements that Kmart’s vendors – domestic and
foreign – must satisfy as a condition of doing business with Kmart.
4. Kmart’s Buying Policy sets forth requirements regarding employee health and
safety, employment practices, wages, hours and benefits. It prohibits the use of
child or forced labor. It also prohibits vendors from penalizing employees who
exercise their right to establish and join legal organizations and prohibits
broad categories of job discrimination.
