Telenovelas: MARIA LA DEL BARRIO (1995)

María la del Barrio (María from the Neighborhood) is the third soap opera of the María Trilogy. Soap stars Fernando Colunga and Itatí Cantoral, amongst others, were part of the superb cast. In the last María telenovela, Thalía portrays María la del Barrio, a scavenger who is adopted by a rich businessman, and falls in love with Luis Fernando (Colunga), an arrogant, rich man.

María married Luis Fernando, had a baby with him, but gave the baby away during a temporary bout of insanity.In this tragic-comedy she portrayed a happy, genuine and full of life young girl, who later turned into a suffering woman grieving for her lost child. It does have a happy ending, though!

The soap opera, without a doubt, touched young and adult audiences around the world due to its innocent, entertaining and enchanting storyline. After the María Trilogy of soap operas circled the globe, a census showed that they have been viewed by more than a billion people around the world!

Telenovelas: MARIMAR (1994)

The second soap opera of the María Trilogy, where she is yet another peasant girl. She lived by the sea with her grandparents, and fell in love with Sergio, the son of the owner of an "hacienda". Sergio's family disapproved of the relationship, especially after the couple married. The cast included renowned soap opera figures such as co-host Eduardo Capetillo and actress Chantal Andere.

This soap marks the beginning of Thalía's international exposure — it is distributed in 180 countries and translated in all languages, stealing the hearts of millions of fans around the world. It paralyzed TV in entire countries, such as Brazil, Mauritius, Indonesia, the Philippines and many others. It also opened new markets in Europe, Asia and the rest of South America, where she traveled to give concerts in Spanish, her native language.

Telenovelas: MARIA MERCEDES  (1992)

Thalía plays leading role in María Mercedes, the first of a successful and unique trilogy of soap operas (also known as the María Trilogy) where she would play poor, young girls called María.

In María Mercedes, the character had to raise her family on her own. Eventually she fell in love with Jorge Luis, a rich man. The amazing cast included co-star, Arturo Peniche, and Thalía's sister, Laura Zapata as the villain. This was the first time Thalía shared space on the TV screen with her sister Laura, something that sometimes caused "trouble" on the set due to the sister's interminable attacks of laughter. In addition, in this soap opera, Thalía had the opportunity to work with producer Valentín Pimstein, the architect of the successful careers of actresses Verónica Castro, Lucía Méndez, Victoria Rufo and Edith González, amongst others.

In summary, María Mercedes turned out to be an absolute hit, and obtained the highest ratings, paralyzing Mexican TV. It definitely won Thalía the title of "The Queen of Telenovelas".

Telenovelas: QUINCEANERA MARIMAR (1987)

Quinceañera (The 15 Year-Old Girl) is Thalía's first leading role in a "telenovela". It becomes the first soap opera produced in Mexico for young audiences. Also produced by Carla Estrada, it included the participation of actress Adela Noriega as Maricruz in the leading role along with Thalía.Thalía plays Beatriz, the daughter of a wealthy family. She and her friend Maricruz — who is not so wealthy — are about to turn 15, an age when they will leave their childhood behind. Beatriz falls in love with Maricruz's brother, a young man who takes advantage of her and leaves her pregnant.The storyline generated a lot of controversy due to the fact that Beatriz got pregnant at such a young age. As a result, the Mexican press published articles about the subject and talked about the misinformation that children sometimes receive from parents. With this role, Thalía grew closer to the public, but especially caught the attention of all those teens who were facing the same problematic situation.
